Fred Astaire was amazing in Easter Parade (1948) and the song "Drum Crazy" was one of the tunes that showcased his remarkable talent. Man, can this guy dance!
The story takes place in the days of Vaudeville. Don (Fred Astaire) and Nadine (Ann Miller) are a famous dancing duo who specialize in elegant ballroom dancing. When Nadine leaves Don to pursue a solo career, Don enlists Hannah (Judy Garland), a chorus girl, to take Nadine's place. Hilarity ensues.
The movie features great songs by Irving Berling, including Easter Parade, Shaking the Blues Away, and Stepping Out with My Baby
Trivia: Gene Kelly was set to play the part of Don, but he twisted his ankle and Astaire took his place.
I don't want to say anything bad about Mr. Astaire - an amazing talent for sure. But I prefer Gene Kelly every day and twice on Sunday, so I wish we could have seen what an Easter Parade starring a untwisted-ankled Gene Kelly would have looked like... Besides, only one of those guys signed an autograph to me!
ReplyDeleteCraig: It would have been a totally different movie with Gene Kelly. He's more athletic and down to earth. Fred was a trouper for stepping in (no pun intended).
ReplyDeleteI lov ethis movie, but I agree with Craig. Gene Kelly would have been AWESOME!
ReplyDeleteZelda: It's a terrific movie. Great story and a very funny script. I don't believe in "coincidences" (Signs...M.Knight Shayamalan). It was meant to be Fred and Judy's show.
