W is for War Films

It's April and that means the A to Z Blogging Challenge! This year my theme is film terms.

War films have been part of American cinema since its beginnings. From the American Revolution to the War on Terror, war films capture the times in which we live.

REVOLUTIONARY WAR
The Patriot (2000)

NAPOLEONIC WARS
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003)

CIVIL WAR
Glory (1989)

WORLD WAR I
Sergeant York (1941)

WORLD WAR II
The Longest Day (1962)

KOREAN WAR
M.A.S.H. (1970)

VIETNAM WAR
Apocalypse Now (1979)

WARS IN THE 21ST CENTURY
American Sniper (2014)

  1. Cool list. The only one I've seen is 'Patriot' and it was awesome. Of course, I've seen the M*A*S*H TV show as well. I doubt the Korean War was that hilarious, but the show certainly lifted spirits while reminding viewers of the realities of death and personal risk.

    1. Susan, M.A.S.H. was a ground-breaking series for sure.

  2. I'm not a fan of war films, but interesting about M.A.S.H.--I've been watching old episodes of Alfred Hitchcock Presents and Robert Altman directed a bunch of them!

    1. Stephanie, that is surprising! I'm a big fan of Hitchcock Presents. I like short mysteries.

  3. I never saw the M*A*S*H movie until I'd seen the entire series. I loved it, and was disturbed by it...

I think I've seen Sargeant York once, but I'm far more familiar with Platoon and Full Metal Jacket, which were bot popular with my younger brother and his group of friends who enlisted in the Army in the early 90s.

    1. Shan, there are some really good war films out there, I've just scratched the surface. I also like The Dirty Dozen, The Guns of Navarone, The Big Red One. The Vietnam films are difficult to watch sometimes because of the nature of that war. Unlike WWII which had a real enemy and American's were fighting for a worthy cause and honored when they returned home.
