A is for Animation

It's April and that means the A to Z Blogging Challenge!
This year my theme is film terms.

The art of animation has changed quite a bit since this French 1908 hand-drawn animation film Fantasmagorie.

Paperman (2012) is a charming love story told without dialog. A perfect example of animation magic.

Full length feature animation appeals to children and adults alike. Pixar Animation Studios created the delightful Ratatouille (2007) about a rat who aspires to be a chef.

What are some of your favorite animated films?

  1. Oh, I could go on for hours.

Anything by Hayao Miyazaki would be at the top of the list - Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, My Neighbour Totoro, etc.

Pixar does some amazing stuff, of course, like WALL-E, The Incredibles, the Toy Stories, Inside Out. Also the 90s Disney Renaissance: Beauty & the Beast, Aladdin, Emperor's New Groove, etc.

There's also some great modern European animation: Triplets of Belleville, Persepolis, Wallace & Gromit. I finally saw Song of the Sea the other day and it was incredible. It is a CRIME that Big Hero 6 beat it for the Academy Award last year.

Then there's the stuff from my childhood that shaped who I am (and also scarred me), like Akira, Barefoot Gen and Ringing Bell, which is still the most brutally devastating movie (let alone cartoon) I have ever seen.

  2. This will be a fascinating series. I recently saw Shawn the Sheep: The Movie with my kids and really enjoyed it. I also remember "Closed Mondays," one of the early claymation films, as being really good.

  3. I have to admit I'm not a huge fan of animation. But Waltz with Bashir has to be one of the most powerful films about war ever made.

    1. Kate, my hubby isn't into animation either, but we all have our preferences. Waltz with Bashir sounds intriguing. I enjoy war-themed films.

  4. Good choice with "Paperman." Movies without dialogue fascinate me, such pure visual storytelling.

I also love Pixar's animated short "La Luna." For feature length animation, "The Emperor's New Groove" is a favorite.

    1. Trudy, I feel the same about visual storytelling. Paperman is a huge favorite. There was a commercial on TV a few years back for United Airlines. Pure visual storytelling in captivating animation. I also LOVED the animation sequence in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Absolutely STUNNING!
